A footy club pavilion takes more punishment than almost any commercial carpet in Melbourne. Hundreds of boots, wet winter Saturdays, post-match functions and spilt drinks, week after week. This is how the East Malvern Football Netball Club, the Panthers, brought the carpets at their D.W. Lucas Oval pavilion in Malvern East back to life mid-season and had the rooms ready for a club event on 14 July, without disrupting a single training night or function.

The short version: the Panthers came to us mid-season with a firm date to hit and a pavilion three clubs share. We quoted fast and competitively, coordinated access with the City of Stonnington and the club’s co-tenants, then deep cleaned every carpeted area using hot water extraction after hours. Years of tracked-in soil lifted out, the original two-tone grey came back, and the rooms were dry and back in service each morning, comfortably ahead of the 14 July event.

The pavilion at D.W. Lucas Oval is a beautiful space – a glass-walled function hall looking straight out over the oval, with a timber-clad bar, a separate function room and a dining area beside original parquet flooring. It hosts everything from post-match presentations to community events, and it is a shared home across the year: the Panthers and the East Malvern Knights juniors through winter, the East Malvern Tooronga Cricket Club through summer.

It also sits directly beside a sports ground. Every week of the season, foot traffic carries in mud, dust and moisture. Over time the carpet had turned a uniform brown – so evenly soiled that most people assumed that was its actual colour.

This was never a case of booking a date and turning up. The request came mid-season, the pavilion sits on council land, and three clubs use it across the year. Here is what we had to work around, and how it came together.
